AP Shamelessly edits Palestinian suffering from Obama’s speech

Important qualifier: Though they didn’t mention it, the transcript was clearly abridged. I guess the person who did the abridging wasn’t interested in Obama’s historic recognition of Palestinian suffering.

“An alert KABOBfest reader noted that an AP transcript of Obama’s speech “as provided by CQ Transcriptions” left out the President’s comments on the suffering of the Palestinians.

The AP’s version has him jump from his moving description of Nazi crimes against the Jews to a warning against the dangers of a nuclear armed Iran:

Six million Jews were killed, more than the entire Jewish population of Israel today. Denying that fact is baseless. It is ignorant, and it is hateful.

It’s about preventing a nuclear arms race in the Middle East that could lead this region and the world down a hugely dangerous path.

In the transcripts posted on the White House’s website, the President’s words on the Palestinian experience are posted:

On the other hand, it is also undeniable that the Palestinian people — Muslims and Christians — have suffered in pursuit of a homeland. For more than 60 years they’ve endured the pain of dislocation. Many wait in refugee camps in the West Bank, Gaza, and neighboring lands for a life of peace and security that they have never been able to lead. They endure the daily humiliations — large and small — that come with occupation. So let there be no doubt: The situation for the Palestinian people is intolerable. And America will not turn our backs on the legitimate Palestinian aspiration for dignity, opportunity, and a state of their own. (Applause.)

Given the accolades for that being the greatest presidential summary of Palestinian victimization under Israeli rule ever, it is shocking it was selectively excised from the transcripts.

Looking at the AP’s version, which is hosted on Yahoo, it is clear the transcripts are abridged. First, they do not acknowledge that. Second, why remove such an important point? I cannot help but think it was motivated by pro-Israel bias.” (Read more from kabobfest.com)

CNN: Recession to end in 2009

“The end of the recession is in sight, according to a new survey of leading economists.

While the economy is showing signs of stabilizing, the recovery will be more moderate than is typical following a severe downturn, said the National Association for Business Economics Outlook in a report released Wednesday.

The panel of 45 economists said it expects economic growth will rebound in the second half of 2009.” (Read more from cnn.com)

Missing the Point

Long time readers will know that I am a fan of Bill Moyers, but I humbly disagree with the thesis of this interview with William Black.

I agree that government regulations on Wall Street have been thoroughly, and blatantly scuttled. (Surprise, surprise.) In my humble opinion however, this observation misses the point.

As usual, they speak honestly, but from a certain set of assumption. William Black seems to take for granted that government needs to subsidize bad home loans. Think back to how Presidents Clinton and later Bush W. both bragged about how a record number of American’s “owned” a home.

If government insists on subsidizing bad loans, bailing out incompetent banks, etc., regulation is need. I agree, but that’s a big IF.

In a free market world where banks simply faced the consequences of irresponsibility, there would be self-regulation and investor-led-regulation more stringent than anything government bureaucrats would ever come up with. Irresponsible companies would go bankrupt.

Liberty works, but we need to give it a chance.

State of the Revolution – the national movement for state sovereignty

“If there’s one thing worse than urban elites at the New York Times, LA Times or the Washington Post who sneer at the mere hint of grassroots conservatism or populism, it’s Midwestern and Southern ‘fly over country’ journalists who strive to emulate them. In a column entitled ‘New states’ rights fight emerges,’ Brian Hicks of Charleston, South Carolina’s the Post & Courier wrote:

For a bunch of guys obsessed with 19th century history, our esteemed state lawmakers sure haven’t learned much from it.

Because the last time they got all uppity and started mouthing off about states’ rights, we got our butts kicked.

Right now, the General Assembly is considering a resolution to warn the federal government not to overstep its bounds by imposing too many laws on the state. They quote the U.S. Constitution and their new favorite amendment, the 10th, to remind President Barack Obama that ‘powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited to it by the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.’

Here we go again. Next thing you know, they’ll be shooting at the Park Service guys out at Fort Sumter.

Ah yes. How silly.

Pace Hicks, after our most recent Republican president took unprecedented liberties with the executive branch, and after the current Democratic president has promised something close to central planning, some state lawmakers have decided to take their stand. And their critics bray, ‘How dare any silly second or third-tier bureaucrats champion the Constitution!'” (from lewrockwell.com)

U.S. bill seeks to rescue faltering newspapers

“WASHINGTON (Reuters) – With many U.S. newspapers struggling to survive, a Democratic senator on Tuesday introduced a bill to help them by allowing newspaper companies to restructure as nonprofits with a variety of tax breaks.” (Read more from reuters.com)

BULLSHIT!!!

1) U.S. newspapers almost unanimously lied us into Iraq, and ignored predictions of the crash. My liberal friends, do you remember how your NY Times and Washington Post helped sell the war?

2) We the people are the center. We the people decide what businesses and industries succeed and fail. WE make this decisions by spending OUR money on goods and services WE desire. The decisions do not belong to the central planners.

3) This represents an even closer marriage between media and power – very, very bad.
