Interventionism by George Reisman
This is one of my favorite Mises Institute podcasts: Inverventionism by George Reismann.
I like Reismann’s approach. He starts with the principle of non-initiation of force; government cannot use violence against peaceful activity, and arrives, inevitably, at libertarianism.
Available here at the Mises Institute.
G8/G20 costs include $80M for food, lodging
When you throw parties with other people’s money…
The Liberals are strongly criticizing the federal government over expenses incurred during the G8/G20 summits, which, expenditure reports reveal, included $80 million for food and accommodation, $85,000 for snacks and $14,000 for glow sticks.

Vancouver taxpayers on hook for $1-billion as most Olympic Village units unsold
When businesses are incompetent, they go bankrupt.
Sixty-six per cent of Vancouver’s pricey Olympic Village condos remain unsold — a total of 483 units at the massive False Creek development that served as athletes’ housing during the two-week 2010 Games.
Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, whose city remains on the hook for more than $1.03 billion of the cost of the project, predicts it will take a “full two-year term” to sell the remaining units.

Resources vs. Academic Achievement
I’ve posted one of these before. Pretty shocking. Both of these fantastic charts are from the Cato Institute.
Seems to me like public education is a welfare system for the bureaucracy.
Freedom, and only freedom can fix education. Ban all public funding of education. Let people keep their money and pay for what they value, and ONLY for what they value.
Surprise, surprise another Federal agency is broke! This time, the National Flood Insurance Program, run by FEMA.
I’m also categorizing this under war on commerce, because government run insurance kills business opportunities for entrepreneurs who might insure profitably by actually measuring risk.
In Wilkinson County, Miss., a home has been flooded 34 times since 1978.
Extraordinary as the damage may be, even more extraordinary is that an insurer has paid claims every time, required no flood proofing, never raised premiums after a claim and vowed to continue insuring the house. Forever.
The home’s value is $69,900. Yet the total insurance payments are nearly 10 times that: $663,000.
It’s no surprise that the insurer faces huge financial problems.
The insurer? The federal government.

Bureaucratic management at its finest. I can hear the rebuttal of my socialist friends now: “If we don’t like the way the government does flood insurance, we can vote them out. If it’s a corporation, we’re stuck.”
FOX & ABCNNBBCBS: MOSQUE AT GROUND ZERO! MOSQUE AT GROUND ZERO! THE EERANIANS AR COMIN TO GIT YOU!
Real or fake – economic stimulus pop quiz
President Obama’s electric car subsidies are snobby and foolish
It’s official: The Chevrolet Volt, the new plug-in electric hybrid car from General Motors, will cost $41,000—that’s a four-seat hatchback for about the base price of a BMW 335i. To be sure, a $7,500 federal tax credit cuts that to $33,500, and electricity is cheaper per mile than gas. But barring some huge oil price spike or stiff new gas tax, it would take more than a decade to offset the higher purchase price.
. . . .
And that’s my problem with the Obama administration’s energy policy, or at least with his lavish subsidies for the Volt, Nissan’s all-electric Leaf (likely sticker price $33,000), and Tesla’s $100,000 all-electric Roadster: Where does the federal government get off spending the average person’s tax dollars to help better-off-than-average Americans buy expensive new cars?

California Official’s $800,000 Salary in City of 38,000 Triggers Protests
Hundreds of residents of one of the poorest municipalities in Los Angeles County shouted in protest last night as tensions rose over a report that the city’s manager earns an annual salary of almost $800,000.
An overflow crowd packed a City Council meeting in Bell, a mostly Hispanic city of 38,000 about 10 miles (16 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles, to call for the resignation of Mayor Oscar Hernandez and other city officials. Residents left standing outside the chamber banged on the doors and shouted “fuera,” or “get out” in Spanish.
It was the first council meeting since the Los Angeles Times reported July 15 that Chief Administrative Officer Robert Rizzo earns $787,637 — with annual 12 percent raises — and that Bell pays its police chief $457,000, more than Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck makes in a city of 3.8 million people. Bell council members earn almost $100,000 for part-time work.

The Real U.S. Government
The Washington Post’s Dana Priest demonstrates once again why she’s easily one of the best investigative journalists in the nation — if not the best — with the publication of Part I of her series, co-written with William Arkin, detailing the sprawling, unaccountable, inexorably growing secret U.S. Government: what the article calls “Top Secret America.” To the extent the series receives much substantive attention (and I doubt it will), the focus will likely be on the bureaucratic problems it documents: the massive redundancies, overlap, waste, and inefficiencies which plague this “hidden world, growing beyond control” — as though everything would better if Top Secret America just functioned a bit more effectively. But the far more significant fact so compellingly illustrated by this first installment is the one I described last week when writing about the Obama administration’s escalating war on whistle blowers:
Most of what the U.S. Government does of any significance — literally — occurs behind a vast wall of secrecy, completely unknown to the citizenry. . . . Secrecy is the religion of the political class, and the prime enabler of its corruption. That’s why whistle blowers are among the most hated heretics. They’re one of the very few classes of people able to shed a small amount of light on what actually takes place.
Green Government: After an almost half billion dollar gov’t loan, we get $100k cars nobody wants
Re: The New York Times’ With First Share Offering, Tesla Bets on Electric Car’s Future
Patrick Barron wrote:
Dear Sirs:
Your article about the upcoming Tesla Motors IPO illustrates beautifully how our government gambles with the peoples’ money. The government has “loaned” Tesla $465 million. I put the word “loan” in parentheses, because this is not a real loan. Undoubtedly the rate is below market, but there is no way of knowing, because there is no loan market for Tesla Motors. No bank board of directors would ever approve such a loan of its depositors’ money. The article speaks for itself–Tesla has lost $290.2 million since it was founded in 2003. It has produced a grand total of one thousand cars, priced at over $100,000 a piece. Its current car has minimal range and few places where it can be recharged. By the time Tesla rolls out its next model, the big players such as Nissan will be offering all-electric cars at a fraction of Tesla’s price. But how can there be a significant market for an all-electric car when nowhere can one find out its electricity cost per mile? And where will America get the power? The government, via the EPA, is making it almost impossible for America’s utility companies to add electricity production. In fact, some current coal-fired power plants are threatened with closure. Nevertheless, the government is pushing this technology and trying to lure buyers by granting tax credits to purchasers of all-electric cars. But, there’s a sucker born every minute. So, if you loved the DeLorean, you’ll probably buy a Tesla.
