By 1958 the claim that Capitalism was impoverishing the world was so ridiculous that the left abandoned it. A writer named Galbraith, in “The Affluent Society” led the way in the new “post-materialist” socialist critique of capitalism. The new criticism was of moral and materialistic degradation, and also claiming that the private secor impoverished the public sector (huh?).

Three Horrifying Facts About the US Debt “Situation”
#1: The US Fed is now the second largest owner of US Treasuries.
That’s right, this week we overtook Japan, leaving China as the only country with greater ownership of US Debt. And we’re printing money to buy it.

#2: “There are only about $550 billion of Treasuries outstanding with a remaining maturity of greater than 10 years.”
This horrifying fact comes courtesy of Morgan Stanley analyst David Greenlaw. And it confirms what I’ve been saying since the end of 2009, that the US has entered a debt spiral: a time in which fewer and fewer investors are willing to lend to us for any long period of time… at the exact same time that we must roll over trillions in old debt and issue an additional $100-150 billion in NEW debt per month in order to finance our massive deficit.
And only $550 billion of the debt we’ve got to roll over has a maturity greater than 10 years!?!?
So we’re talking about TRILLIONS of old debt coming due in the next decade.

#3: The US will Default on its Debt
… either that or experience hyperinflation. There is simply no other option. We can NEVER pay off our debts. To do so would require every US family to pay $31,000 a year for 75 years.
Media Manipulation, as usual
As usual, when something important happens that might reflect poorly on the government, our media does what it does best: it lies.
Here’s the latest example. The original, widely published story was this:
A U.S.-led military rescue operation ended in failure Friday when a Taliban militant set off explosives that killed a British aid worker kidnapped two weeks ago in eastern Afghanistan, Western officials said Saturday.

During the rescue, Western officials said, one of the captors detonated explosives near Norgrove, killing himself and the aid worker, who was spearheading a development project run by Development Alternatives Inc., an international consulting firm based in Washington, D.C.
It’s become a little harder to find the original. I excerpted the above from this McClatchy Newspaper.
Only later, after the shock, and false-reality sets in, after our interest wanders elsewhere, do we get the actual story:
A grenade thrown by U.S. forces may have killed a kidnapped British aid worker in Afghanistan, British Prime Minister David Cameron said Monday, as the U.S. military announced an investigation into the failed rescue attempt.

. . . but, but, but, the original was so convincing. I mean I could almost see it. Just like in the movies: selfless rescuers coming to the aid of an attractive woman, while evil terrorists stand ready to blow up her (and themselves) in the name of evil fanaticism.
Looking back at the original report, it seems the military anticipated, i.e. “prepped the battlefield” for the apology they’d eventually be making:
“There was no choice,” said a senior official with the U.S-led military coalition in Afghanistan who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to officially discuss the incident. “There was good information that this needed to be done because there were concerns that her life was in imminent danger.”
I’m going to go out on a limb and presume the “Western officials” were well versed in the 25 disinformation techniques and knew from the start their duty was to bullshit. I mean, look at the level of detail in the original misinformation:
Two Western officials said the captor used a suicide vest.
Some might even call it . . . . L-Y-I-N-G.
I intend no disrespect to the fallen or to the soldiers. I myself served in Kunar province where the incident took place, and know some of its valleys as well as I know the back of my hand. I’ve enjoyed great friendships with my fellow soldiers, Afghans and aid workers.

Thirty companies and organizations get waivers from the new health care overhaul because otherwise they’d have to raise rates or drop coverage. The president said neither would happen. Hey, where’s our waiver?
When McDonald’s told federal regulators in a recent memo that it would be “economically prohibitive” for its insurance carrier to continue to cover its 30,000 hourly workers unless it received a waiver from the ObamaCare requirement that 80% of premiums for such minimed plans be spent on medical care, alarm bells went off in the White House.
Suddenly the “affordable health care for Americans” that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke of when she passed a bill no one had read was revealed to be an unaffordable fraud that threatened to throw untold numbers of young workers into the ranks of the uninsured in an already precarious election year.
So now McDonald’s has its waiver, for 115,000 workers, not just 30,000. Jack in the Box also has a waiver, as do 28 other companies and organizations. The largest waiver, for 351,000 people, is for, appropriately enough, a union — specifically the United Federation of Teachers Welfare Fund, a New York brotherhood that covers teachers. Lawsuits over health care law heat up
Matt Sissel of Iowa City proudly served in Iraq as a combat medic. But he objects to being “conscripted” into an overhauled federal health care system.
The uninsured artist is riled about a provision in the new health law that would require him to purchase insurance or pay a penalty starting in 2014. Last July, he filed a lawsuit to have the landmark act declared unconstitutional. “I don’t want the federal government dictating my personal financial decisions,” says Sissel, 29. “It can’t even run its own budget.”

Seems the media is upholding Digg’s false image of superiority over Reddit, its rival user-driven information site.
I’ve sensed that my flavor of controversial stories never seem to achieve any prominence on Digg. The paranoid side of me thinks Digg is more easily influenced by the establishment, and therefore rewareded with favorable reviews by Big Media.
By the way, there is a ***brilliant*** cartoon about the Digg-Reddit war. It’s extremely well-told and full of inside-jokes.

In a surprisingly blunt speech, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner took China to task for maintaining what the U.S. considers a deliberately undervalued exchange rate aimed at helping China’s export industries.
“When large economies with undervalued exchange rates act to keep the currency from appreciating, that encourages other countries to do the same,” said Mr. Geithner, using language that referred directly to China, in an address at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. “This sets off a dangerous dynamic” as nations compete to keep their currencies undervalued. Dear Sirs:
The Geithner speech is nonsense on two levels. Number one, and most importantly, if a country holds its currency cheap, it is subsidizing the living standards of its trading partners. If the Chinese are foolish enough to subsidize our lifestyle–which, by the way, they have been doing for some time now–then why would we desire that they stop? Secondly, the logic of his argument is childish. If we think China’s monetary policy is wrong, why are we encouraged to do the same thing? (I can just hear Mrs. Geithner asking her little boy Timothy why he jumped in the mud puddle…and little Timothy telling his mother that he did it because his friend did it.)
No country can force another country to pay its bills or cause another country to have higher unemployment. The most damage that a country can do to another is indirectly–by adopting policies that reduce its contribution to the world economy. For example, the world is worse off because Cuba is a communist country and does not produce goods for the world market.

Did you know that the Fraser Institute publishes an annual review of hospital waiting times in Canada?

The Fraser Institute’s nineteenth annual waiting list survey found that Canada-wide waiting times for surgical and other therapeutic treatments decreased in 2009. Total waiting time between referral from a general practitioner and treatment, averaged across all 12 specialties and 10 provinces surveyed, fell from 17.3 weeks in 2008 to 16.1 weeks in 2009.

Despite a two week fall from the high reached in 2007, the total wait time remains high, both historically and internationally. Compared to 1993, the total waiting time in 2009 is 73 percent longer.

Finally, the promise of the Canadian health care system is not being realized. On the contrary, a profusion of research reveals that cardiovascular surgery queues are routinely jumped by the famous and politically-connected, that sub urban and rural residents con front barriers to access not encountered by their urban counter parts, and that low-income Canadians have less access to specialists.
