  1. as a chronic on-again-off-again smoker (currently off), i find the ‘no smoking’ sign to be incredibly counterproductive in most situations. most of the trick for quitting smoking (and most things, i think) is just to not think about it, and try to forget cigarettes exist. this is a very difficult thing to do when there are pictures of lit cigarettes with alluring wisps of delicious smoke literally everywhere you turn. its not like anyone who wasnt born yesterday doesnt realize that you cant smoke inside in most places, so basically all these signs do is make people trying to quit miserable and/or unsuccessful. i could just be projecting my own issues onto the smoking masses, but i would really like to do a study about the effects of these signs on people trying to quit.
