THE INFLUENCE GAME: Federal regulation worries UFC

“WASHINGTON Ultimate Fighting Championship has come to Washington to engage in the city’s ultimate sport: lobbying. . . .

The sport’s owners are concerned that it could come under federal regulation by a proposed new commission to regulate boxing that two senior lawmakers are pushing. To help head that off, the Las Vegas-based UFC spent $240,000 last year lobbying Congress.

Its biggest task, said lobbyist Makan Delrahim, is to convince Congress that the sport has cleaned up its act since the 1990s, when it drew the opposition of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. He once referred to it as ‘human cockfighting’ and called for it to be banned. . . .

In 2005, the Justice Department sent a letter to the Senate Commerce Committee, expressing “serious constitutional objections to several provisions of the bill,” such as one that would limit the president’s authority to remove members of the boxing commission. That letter was signed by William Moschella, an assistant attorney general; Moschella has since left the government and is now part of UFC’s lobbying team.

Peter Schiff on the Alex Jones Show

Alex Jones is a little radical for some people’s tastes. His show is focused on fighting what he perceives as coming fascism. These days, I admire anyone with a dissenting voice. If he is right, his rage is complete warranted. Peter Schiff is a widely-respected investment guru who predicted the current financial crisis, and has been strenuously warning about it since 2006.

Global War on Political Dissent Progressing in India

“Following the late November terror attacks in Mumbai, India has passed two tough laws being seen by rights activists as potentially eroding the country’s federal structure and limiting fundamental liberties. . . .

‘The UAPA Act is particularly vile, and will have the effect of turning India into a virtual police state,’ says Colin Gonsalves, executive director of the Delhi-based Human Rights Law Network. ‘It basically brings back a discredited law, the Prevention of Terrorism Act of 2002 (POTA), except for admitting confessions made to a police officer as legal evidence.’

POTA was an extremely unpopular law, which the UPA government abrogated upon coming to power in 2004 in response to innumerable complaints of its selective and discriminatory use against India’s Muslim minority, and its cavalier and irresponsible application to offenses not even remotely connected with terrorism.” (Read more from antiwar.com)

“The Armed Forces Press Service has initiated a propaganda campaign designed to convince the American people that deploying the 3rd Infantry Division in the United States in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act is a good thing. The propaganda piece appeared on the Hinesville, Georgia, Coastal Courier’s website on December 26.

‘The first active-duty unit dedicated to supporting U.S. civilian authorities in the event of a nuclear, biological or chemical attack recently wrapped up three days of intensive training its members hope they never have to apply in real life,’ Donna Miles reports for the Armed Forces Press Service.” (Read more from prisonplanet.com)

The Real Victor in Iraq: Monsanto

“Five years of occupation, more than $558 billion spent, 4,182 U.S. soldiers and 655,000 Iraqi civilians dead, and it now looks like Monsanto (NYSE.MON – $71.95) is going to be the real victor in Iraq thanks to a postwar document known as Order 81.

Part of the infamous 100 Orders, Order 81 mandates that Iraq’s commercial-scale farmers must now purchase “registered” seeds. These are available through agribusiness giants like Monsanto, Cargill Corporation (a private company) and the World Wide Wheat Company (also private), but Monsanto is far and away the most significant player in the registered seed market.

Monsanto’s seeds are “terminator” seeds. This means they are inherently sterile, and any seed they produce does not give birth to more plants.” (Read more from thepanelist.com)

Freedom Santas

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) _ A group of Santa impersonators are on the naughty list of Arizona law enforcement officials.

A YouTube video posted Monday shows four people dressed as Kris Kringle, white beards and red hats included, covering three speed and red light enforcement cameras in Tempe.

Two are covered with boxes – one decorated with Christmas wrap – and the third is blocked with what appears to be a red sheet.

The Jackson 5’s “Santa Claus is coming to town” plays during the more than two-minute video.

At the end is a message that reads:

“Ho Ho Ho! Death to the surveillance state! Free movement for all people!”

The group that posted the video also wrote “lumps of coal to all of those who make it their business to watch and control.”

Where does money come from?

UPDATE: This popular video is incorrect in several respects. Bankers do not end up owning everything. They certainly profit from the transactions, but they sell their debts. $1,111.11 simply does not create $100k of new money in the banking system. The proposals at the end are sorely misguided. For accurate criticism of the monetary system, go to mises.org.

I’ve watched this educational cartoon approximately five times since discovering it a few months ago. It presents the simple, tragic absurdity of our monetary system.

For example, most people believe that if individuals, companies, governments all saved and got out of debt, society would be prosperous, when the opposite is true. If everyone began saving and paying off their debts, there would be no money. Money is debt. Without debt, there is no money.

Watch at least the first three parts for an explanation of this. As an aid, I summarize each part and transcribe the many great quotes presented in the videos.

Part 1

-The shift of goldsmiths from artisans to bankers.
-The evolution of lending gold, to lending depositors gold, to lending non-existant gold.

I’m certain this diverges with the Austrian Economic point of view. I’ve heard this video series called socialist because it proposes government control of the monetary supply. I think the first two and half parts are an effective expose on the banking system. The ending is suspect.

Obama’s Hawks – more of the same

Antiwar groups fear Barack Obama may create hawkish Cabinet

Activists note that most of the candidates for top security posts voted for the 2002 resolution authorizing President Bush to invade Iraq or otherwise supported launching the war.

Reporting from Washington — Antiwar groups and other liberal activists are increasingly concerned at signs that Barack Obama’s national security team will be dominated by appointees who favored the Iraq invasion and hold hawkish views on other important foreign policy issues.

“It’s astonishing that not one of the 23 senators or 133 House members who voted against the war is in the mix,” said Sam Husseini of the liberal group Institute for Public Accuracy.

Clinton, who was Obama’s chief opponent during the Democratic presidential primaries, appears to be the top candidate for secretary of State in his administration. Speculation about Clinton has dismayed some liberal activists but has cheered some conservatives such as former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and editor William Kristol of the Weekly Standard.

Clinton voted in favor of the Iraq war resolution, and despite pressure, she never said during the primary campaign that she regretted that vote. She also favored legislation last year to support the designation of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, another decision that pleased conservatives. There is no “left” opposing the “right.” It is power vs. freedom, and both parties have come to represent power. Resist.

This is an early indication, that the prophet, Ron Paul was right again: Obama = more of the same.

Question: Can we create cult of personality who’ll allow the privileged criminals who run this country to continue frittering away American lives and American wealth in pursuit of empire?
