Japanese islanders stage mass rally against US base

Nearly 100,000 protesters attended a rally on Okinawa Sunday to demonstrate against a US air base in a row that is dominating Japan’s national politics and souring its ties with Washington.

Okinawa governor Hirokazu Nakaima, the speaker of the Okinawa assembly and most of the mayors of the Okinawa prefecture’s 41 towns joined the huge protest near Kadena Air Base, the Asia-Pacific region’s largest US military facility. (Read more from news.yahoo.com)

Iowa City Tea Party draws diverse crowd

The movement doesn’t have a uniform platform, a national committee, or many names on ballots.
In general, Tea Party members oppose large government spending and congressional Democrats like Loebsack.

But beyond that, there are few commonalties among Iowa City’s self-described Tea Partiers.

While a number of attendees donned GOP gear, one Tea Party speaker, University of Iowa student Jeff Shipley, voiced his distrust of Republicans and Democrats alike.

“You have the stupid party on the right and the evil party on the left. Sometimes they do something that’s both stupid and evil; they call that bipartisanship,” he said. “I see no difference between Obama and Bush.” (Read more from dailyiowan.com)

Trial over death of U.S. activist Rachel Corrie begins

The family of an American activist who was fatally crushed by an Israeli bulldozer in Gaza accused Israel of whitewashing its investigation into the death Wednesday in the opening of a civil case against Israel.

The parents of Rachel Corrie are seeking unspecified compensation from Israel’s Defense Ministry for their daughter’s death in 2003.

Corrie, a U.S. citizen, was 24 when she was struck and killed in 2003 by a bulldozer as she and other activists tried to stop Israel razing homes in Rafah by using their bodies as human shields.

The driver said he didn’t see her, and the Israel Defense Forces has ruled her death an accident – a version her parents reject. (Read more from haaretz.com)

Texas pilot air attack on US tax office

The pilot of a plane which crashed into an office block in Austin, Texas left a note expressing his anger at federal tax authorities, police say.

Police are linking the apparent suicide note left online to Joseph Andrew Stack, the man named as the pilot.

The note criticised the Internal Revenue Service – based inside the office block and declared: “Violence is the only answer”.

Firefighters continue to search for one person who is still unaccounted for. (Read more from news.bbc.co.uk)

12 Arrested For Disrupting Israeli Ambassador At UC Irvine

Twelve people were arrested this evening during a raucous lecture at UC Irvine where Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren came to talk about U.S.-Israel relations.

Oren was interrupted 10 times while trying to give his speech before 500 people at the UCI Student Center, where there was heavy security. Oren took a 20 minute break after the fourth protest, asked for hospitality and resumed his speech, only to be interrupted again by young men yelling at him every few minutes. Many members of the audience also applauded Oren.

After the 10th interruption, several dozens students who opposed Oren’s talk got up and walked out and staged a protest outside. It is not clear whether they were members of the UCI Muslim Student Union, which issued an email earlier in the day condemning Oren’s appearance on campus.

US House of Representatives has condemned the Goldstone Report

The US House of Representatives has condemned the Goldstone Report, which accuses Israel of committing war crimes in Gaza. The resolution, which defined the report as “one-sided and distorted” was supported by a wide majority of 334 delegates against 36 who opposed it. Twenty-two delegates abstained.
