GOOD! I am a blogger. Hear me roar!

Also, Our society suffers if newspapers fall silent

Hahahahahaha! Right. Without the Big Media, how will we know who to hate, who to fear and where to make war?

  1. im sorry, but i find it patently ridiculous when bloggers act like they are an entity of their own divorced from the regular media. the fact is, a majority of blog posts link to big media articles. im not saying there isnt a value in that, and the commentary blogs provide, but the resources to investigate and pursue stories come from the media, with bloggers tending to act as [useful] parasites.
all that said, its one thing to cheer the downfall of papers that are part of huge monopolistic media conglomerates, but the fact that these newspapers are failing is a warning to other small media outlets (and bloggers) that somehow, someone is going to have to find a sustainable way of financing media or there are going to be a lot fewer sources of information out there period.

  2. The failures are not a warning to me. I don’t even cover my hosting expenses with the little bit of advertising I have, and that’s fine. I blog out of passion. I need an outlet. I see the newspapers as agents of propaganda who help send us (meaning me) to wars overseas. The hell with them.

  3. thats not my point though… blog posts are rarely original content, even the most insightful posts are usually a commentary on links to conventional media stories, without regular media, most blogs (including yours) would have very little to say.

the other point is… despite your low costs, you are still trying to cover them with advertising $$$, which is precisely the problem big media and soon all media will have, internet ad traffic simply does not generate enough $ for advertisers, and thus media outlets. Personally, I think this is a GREAT thing, Id rather not have my news tied to advertising $… and when I think about the media I consume that does not have ads and is mostly supported directly by consumers (Ms. and WNYC), that content is usually miles ahead of others. But, a move from ad to consumer/subscription revenue based media is going to required a real shift in thought by media consumers, AND, if companies go the route of subcription content, you bloggers will be screwed because youll end up linking to content your readers will have to pay to see… im babbling here, but I hope i got my point across…

  4. You say we rely on them. I think we’d be fine – better off even – without them. If the bright lights of Big Media shut off, we’ll finally be able to see the stars.

  5. Im not saying I think youre wrong – there is the distinct possibility whatever rises in its place will be way better. I just think its a bit hasty to cheer about it, because there is also the possibility that without big media newspapers, there will be less content/information available period. however limited or filtered or misleading the info msm provides, at least its something.
